The City Council has partnered with TOTEM, a leader in telecommunications infrastructure management, to strengthen the city’s connectivity

Barcelona City Council has reached an agreement with the towerco TOTEM Spain to install different connectivity solutions in the La Barceloneta seafront area.

Due to the sports events taking place in Barcelona this year, the City Council and TOTEM have joined forces to install a series of devices (three small cells and one macrocell). This will provide infrastructure to mobile operators to enhance the connectivity deemed necessary in this area of the city in the coming months. After the event, the installed devices will continue to provide services to mobile operators and local residents.

Patrick Farges, CEO of TOTEM Spain, explains that for the company, “the deployment of small cells exemplifies the company’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement of telecommunications infrastructure in Spain. TOTEM is proud to have collaborated with the City Council to provide something as important as connectivity to operators in Barcelona”.

Small cells, an important solution for urban connectivity

Small cells are small mobile stations that are highly versatile in terms of location and integration in an urban environment. These solutions can increase the capacity and coverage of mobile networks, particularly in areas with high user demand. These inconspicuous devices can blend seamlessly into the city’s urban landscape, whether in newsstands, traffic lights, banners or store signage.

Also, reflecting the commitment to sustainability shared by Barcelona City Council and TOTEM, small cells consume 20 times less power than the equipment in a traditional telecommunications tower.

This small cells installation project in Barcelona is part of the company’s plan to promote the growth and development of 5G networks in Spain, with a focus on the development of smart cities, one of the main challenges and objectives for companies in the telecommunications sector. Recent studies[1] show that the small cells market will grow very rapidly in the coming years, with a CAGR of 37.1% through to 2030.
