Small cell deployment in Zamora: a step towards sustainable, efficient connectivity
At the end of 2024, TOTEM began deploying small cells in the city of Zamora, Spain. This ambitious project began with the installation of a mast in the heart of the city, marking a significant step towards improving connectivity for citizens and municipal services.
Why are small cells the solution for tomorrow’s smart cities?
As Javier Santos Redín, Head of Labor Relations, Prevention and Recruitment at TOTEM Spain, explains, this initiative has two main objectives:
Ensuring adequate infrastructure: Small cells enable operators to provide optimal connectivity to citizens and all municipal services, thus meeting growing communication needs.
Ensuring sustainable connectivity: This type of installation is designed to be both efficient and environmentally friendly, with minimal visual impact on the urban ecosystem.
Better connectivity in the city: the importance of good public-private collaboration
The success of this project depends on close collaboration between the public and private sectors. Ana Belén González Rogado, Councillor for European Funds, Urban Planning, Digital Transformation and Press at Zamora City Council, emphasizes the importance of this cooperation: “The deployment of Small cells is a key fact in moving Zamora forward as a smart city.”
The impact of small cells in tomorrow’s smart cities
Small cells represent a significant technological advance in the field of telecommunications. They can increase network capacity by 20 to 100 times compared with traditional infrastructures, while reducing operating costs.
What’s more, their deployment reduces the risk of mobile network saturation, offering an enhanced user experience.
The small cell deployment project in Zamora is a concrete example of how modern technologies can transform cities into more connected and sustainable spaces. By fostering effective collaboration between public and private players, TOTEM and the city of Zamora are paving the way for a future where connectivity is accessible to all, while preserving the integrity of the urban environment.
