  • TOTEM announces that it has installed small cells technology in iconic locations in the city of Madrid (including Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de Colón).

  • Small cells are smaller mobile stations enable to increase mobile network capacity and coverage, particularly in areas with high network demand;

  • In the coming years, thousands of these devices are due to be installed in large cities in Spain to boost connectivity and foster the development of smart cities, with an annual growth rate higher than 35%[1] until 2030[2].

TOTEM provides small cells solutions to optimize connectivity in densely populated urban areas across Spain, while deploying this technology at hundreds of locations in Spain for its mobile operator customers.

Small cells are small-scale mobile stations that are highly versatile in terms of their location and integration in the urban environment. These solutions can increase mobile network capacity and coverage, particularly in areas with high network user demand. These inconspicuous devices can also easily blend into the urban landscape in cities – whether in newspaper kiosks, traffic lights, banners, or shop signs.

Small cells are low-power cellular network access points with a range of up to several hundred meters. They are particularly suitable for extending the 5G network and covering areas not served by the outdoor network. This equipment consumes 20 times less power than the equipment in a traditional telecom tower.

This solution complements the traditional telecom towers. Small cell deployment is part of the TOTEM’s plan to promote the development of 5G networks in Spain, as they are key to support the high speeds required by the newest generation of mobile networks. This technology should be essential in the development of future business in major cities.

Patrick Farges, CEO of TOTEM Spain, notes that for the company, “the deployment of small cells is a clear example of TOTEM’s commitment to innovation and the continuous improvement of telecom infrastructure in Spain. We are confident that these solutions are essential to meet the operators’ growing connectivity needs and to drive the development of 5G networks in Spain, while giving our customers the opportunity to choose between more options to extend their coverage.”
